Hawthorn - Crataegus sp.

Hawthorn berries have been recognised for their heart and vascular benefits for ages, supported by extensive scientific studies. Hawthorn benefits the cardiovascular system in three key ways:

  1. Improved circulation: Hawthorn widens coronary and brain vessels, enhancing blood flow and the delivery of nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. It achieves this by dilating major vessels and increasing blood flow from the heart, aiding circulation.
  2. Antioxidant properties: With antioxidant properties, Hawthorn helps combat free radicals that can harm the blood and contribute to vascular issues. It has been considered as an alternative to the drug digitalis, potentially enhancing its effects.
  3. Heartbeat regulation: Hawthorn stabilises and strengthens an irregular or weak heartbeat, acting as a potential substitute for digitalis.

These benefits are attributed to the rich flavonoid content in Hawthorn. Flavonoids are essential for maintaining disease resistance and the integrity of smooth muscle tissues. Studies on rats have indicated the potential of Hawthorn flavonoids in preventing myocardial damage under physiological stress.

For animals, especially those under cardiovascular stress like racehorses and working dogs, daily Hawthorn Berry supplements may offer preventative advantages. Older animals with chronic heart issues, kidney problems or post surgical dysfunction can benefit from this cardiovascular tonic.

Feeding Hawthorn to pets is easy as it's palatable. If your pet dislikes the taste, consider using Hawthorn gel capsules wrapped in cheese or opt for low alcohol hawthorn extract.

Hawthorn is safe. In fact, in the hundreds of animals studies that have been conducted with this herb since 1900, Hawthorn has shown extremely low toxicity in every animal tested. We place the toxicity potential of Hawthorn Berries on the same level as that of rose hip, raspberries or blueberries - in other words, Hawthorn is a medicinal food.
