Ginkgo - Ginkgo Biloba

Over 400 scientific studies confirm the effectiveness of Ginkgo in animals and humans, in Germany and Europe Ginkgo is commonly prescribed.

Initially, Ginkgo benefits were attributed to flavour glycosides and terpene lactose, enhancing blood circulation. However, recent research shows Ginkgo has a more intense mix of components. Ginkgo prevents platelet aggregation, reducing blood stickiness, especially in small capillaries. It regulates blood vessel tone, making them stronger, aiding against degenerative diseases.

Ginkgo is an excellent cerebrovascular tonic for older animals, improving blood flow to the brain, potentially preventing strokes & promoting a better quality of life. Studies suggest it may benefit age related cases of chronic depression or abnormal behaviour.

While Ginkgo is widely known for it's uses in Alzheimer's and dementia, it's equally valuable as a vascular tonic in various parts of the body. It improves circulation in peripheral capillaries, aiding recovery from trauma, chronic diseases or surgery.

Historically Ginkgo has been a tonic for weak kidney function. Combining Ginkgo with hawthorn has shown positive results in early stage renal failure,  likely due to improved blood flow.

Beyond vascular effects, ginkgo acts as a nervous system tonic in the brain. Though it's neurological mechanisms are complex, it increases brain energy and neurotransmitter release, influencing various body tissues.

Ginkgo is versatile,  potentially aiding issues like urinary incontinence, seizures, neuralgia, skin problems, digestive upset, cardiac arrhythmia and behavioural disorders.

As always, consult your veterinarian and use caution before substituting any herb for your pets medicine.Ginkgo is generally safe, but because of it's ability to inhibit platelet aggregation in the blood, its use may be contradicted in the presence of blood thinning drugs or in animals with blood clotting disorders. While Ginkgo improves the body's ability to heal after surgery, its use should be delayed until all risk of post-operative haemorrhage has passed.

Add 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of leaves to a cup of hot water and allow to infuse for 2-3 minutes before straining and serving. Ensure the tea has cooled adequately before presenting it to your dog.
